How to Navigate Power Outages at Your Cinema

Power outages can cause chaos for your cinema. Questions quickly arise: How do you evacuate moviegoers in the building? What’s the best way to alert potential customers about the outage? When should you alert customers that power is back on? The best way to circumvent these questions is to have a plan! Check out our tips below to create your cinemas plan to navigate power outages at your cinema.

1. Safety First ⚠️

Immediately evacuate your cinema if the power outage occurs during operating hours. Follow your emergency exit plans and ensure all moviegoers + employees are out of the building. Encourage moviegoers to DM your cinema on socials or email if their movie wasn’t finished. Offer a time for moviegoers to come back to your cinema (it doesn’t hurt to throw in a free medium popcorn) to view the film or offer a refund of their ticket(s).

2. Contact Your Landlord and/or Power Company ☎️

Once moviegoers and employees are safe, contact your landlord/power company. This is an obvious one, but the quicker you call, the quicker power can be restored!

3. Plan Ahead 📝

Planning is key for this one. Have graphics and emailers ready in anticipation of an event like this occurring. Don’t leave this one until the last minute! Your marketing/social media team will be scrambling to post something on social platforms or send out alerts in emailers. Craft a graphic (like the above) now using your cinema’s brand guidelines and draft your copy for your emailers today to keep on-deck in case your cinema’s power ever goes out.

We highly discourage you and your team from grabbing an image from Google to post (like the image to the left). These images don’t look great and don’t perform well in the algorithm, which means they won’t reach a high number of people.

4. Alert Potential Moviegoers About the Outage 📲

Post your pre-planned graphics to FB + IG Stories (not to your main feed) and shoot out emailers to let moviegoers know about the outage. Posting power outage graphics to your main feed can deter future moviegoers from hitting up your cinema if they see those graphics. Tag local news outlets + blogs in the hopes that they will repost to increase your reach. If you have a relationship with these blogs/outlets, shoot them an email with a graphic for them to post to their socials.

5. Power is Restored! Now, Get the Word Out 🗣️

Again, design your graphics + emailers in anticipation of restored power so that they’re ready to go. With proper planning, your marketing team can easily post a graphic to IG/FB Stories and shoot out an email to your subscribers to alert them that power has been restored! Remember to tag local blogs + news outlets, so they can spread the word that you are back in business!

Hopefully, your cinema never experiences a power outage! But, we hope these tips help you prepare for this type of event! Remember, plan ahead, plan ahead, plan ahead!
